HEILIG EN PROFAAN 3
Holy and Profane 3

update

The board of the Medieval Religious and Profane Badges Foundation would like to bring you up-to-date with how things are going with the planned publication of the third volume in the series Heilig en Profaan / Holy and Profane, the collection of volumes that aims to provide the most complete possible overview of the late medieval pilgrims’ badges and profane insignias found in the Netherlands. The first volume, containing 1,036 catalogue numbers, came out in 1993; the second volume appeared in 2001 and added another 1,142 insignias. It was the intention that the third volume should be published at the end of 2009 or the beginning of 2010, but due to a number of reasons this has proved impossible. The workgroup is devoting itself to the essential preparations and expects to be able to publish the new volume in the first half of 2011. As in the two earlier books, this volume will include the religious and profane badges that have been found in the Netherlands and can be dated no later than the middle of the sixteenth century. Naturally these insignias differ from the examples published earlier. At the moment it seems that at least 1,000 badges will be considered. Apart from these new sorts and types, a number of insignias will be included that, due to their good condition, can give more information than the preserved fragments of pilgrims’ badges and profane insignias that were published earlier. Finally, a number of examples will be included because we now have greater insight into their origins and /or dating. Once again a great deal of attention will be paid to description and interpretation.

In order to give the best picture possible of the insignias to be included in the publication it is essential to have high quality digital images. It is also essential that data in connection with the location of the find, measurements of length and breadth are accurate; information on dating, where possible based on the archeological context, is of great importance. Many institutions and individuals have already provided this data; at the beginning of 2011 once again all contributors will be approached personally with regard to their definite permission to publish their find(s). At that time too, any missing data will be filled and processed, and the contributors will be asked how they wished to be mentioned in Heilig en Profaan 3.

Of course it is possible that in the coming months more badges that could be considered for inclusion will be found. These would be types as yet unknown to the workgroup. If you suspect that you have such a badge, then we would be grateful if you would send the details and good digital photographs of both the front and back of the badge to foundation@medievalbadges.org before November 15th 2010.

For those of you who find new types of badges after this date, the Foundation is happy to tell you that we expect that in the future a fourth volume of Heilig en Profaan will be published, as soon as sufficient new types of insignia have been reported. One thing is certain – due to the many finds made in the Netherlands in recent decades and the presentation of these in the publications of Heilig en Profaan, the knowledge of and interest in late medieval badges has increased significantly. The importance of late medieval insignias, both religious and profane, as material sources for cultural historical research has received increasing international acknowledgment. Heilig en Profaan 3 will further contribute to this recognition.

Pilgrimage and parchment

published: 12.11.2009
author: Hanneke van Asperen

The author of the Dutch publication 'Pilgrimage and Parchment' (Pelgrimstekens op Perkament) focuses on the question: why do late-medieval books often show traces of pilgrims' badges? On the basis of a hundred medieval manuscripts, largely unpublished material, the publication offers a new perspective on the role of pilgrims' badges and devotional manuscripts in daily life.
